ABOUT US

Help us build an equitable society where citizens are equipped with the tools and the passion to read, write, and tell stories, are empowered to consider other points of view, and where the work of artists is respected as a necessary pillar of democracy.

The AfterWords Literary Festival was co-founded by Ryan Turner and Stephanie Domet. We celebrated our first festival in the fall of 2019 with twenty writers from across Canada, the United States, and abroad.  Our fifth annual festival happened October 29 to November 5, with events in person and virtually, featuring writers like Emma Donoghue, Sean Michaels, Alicia Elliott, Zoe Whittall, Amy Jones, Sylvia D. Hamilton and many more. Our sixth annual festival happens November 2-10, 2024, so save the date, and sign up for our newsletter to stay in the loop!

Previous festival authors include New York Times bestselling author Roxane Gay and Booker-nominated novelist Avni Doshi, along with Lawrence Hill, Katherena Vermette, Souvankham Thammavongsa, Sheila Heti, Jody Wilson-Raybould, David Bergen, Jesse Wente, and Kim Stanley Robinson. We've also welcomed children's authors like Sydney Smith, Jack Wong, Lauren Soloy, Briana Corr Scott, Sal Sawler, Fabien Melanson, Denis Boucher, and many more.

SUPPORT THE FESTIVAL

Did you know that AfterWords is a registered charity?

We rely on people in our community who support the work we are doing. Our monthly donors make it possible for us to continue our core activity—offering excellent literary programming that’s accessible to a broad audience at a low ticket price—while also reaching for new opportunities that arise throughout the year. For as little as $10 a month, you too can support our work in this way.

Our monthly donors support our ongoing work with the Modern Mi’kma’ki Podcast, our Youth Mentorship Program, our Little Free Library next to the Halifax Community Fridge, our Heritage Day programming, and more. When you make a one-time or monthly donation, you are part of this vital work. We’re grateful to have the support of our community!

You’ll receive a tax receipt for donations above $10. We are also able to accept gifts of stock. Every bit helps us build a sustainable AfterWords.

Thank you.
